You do not need to know how to write a song.

You do not even need to know what your song is about.

You only need to bring your story.

What if songwriting isn't about writing a hit?

For most of my life, songwriting has been far more than a career or a way to make music.

It has been a tool for understanding myself.

We live in a culture that tends to talk about songwriting in terms of what happens after the song is written.

Will people listen to it?

Will it be recorded?

Could it be a hit?

But I believe there is something incredibly meaningful that can happen simply through the process of writing the song itself.

A story can live inside of us for 20 years.

We can replay it. Carry it. Try to understand it. Let it quietly shape the way we move through the world.

And then somehow, through the strange alchemy of songwriting, that enormous story can become three minutes of music.

A verse.

A chorus.

A melody.

A few words that suddenly allow us to see the story differently.

Sometimes a song becomes a mirror.

Sometimes it reveals something we didn't realize we were carrying.

Sometimes it gives language to something we've never quite known how to say.

And sometimes it simply captures a moment in our lives that we don't want to lose.

The song simply helps us listen.

I don't want to just write a song for you.

My father used to remind me of the old saying:

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

That philosophy has shaped so much of the way I operate in the world.

So while I could sit down, listen to your story and write a song about it for you, that isn't what Soul Song Sessions are about.

I want you to experience what it feels like to write the song.

If you've never written before, I may carry more of the technical weight. I'll help find the chords, follow the melody, recognize the lyrical threads and shape the structure.

But I'll also tell you what I'm hearing.

Why a particular line feels alive.

Why we might repeat a phrase.

Why the melody wants to rise there.

Why something you said casually ten minutes ago might actually be the heart of the chorus.

I want to give you a window into the craft itself.

Because my hope isn't that you leave saying:

Phoebe wrote me a song.

My hope is that you leave saying:

“I wrote a song.”

This is for anyone

Maybe you've never written a song in your life.

Maybe you've been writing songs for 30 years.

Maybe you're moving through grief.

A transition.

A birth.

A loss.

A love story.

A question you can't quite answer.

Maybe there is a story you've told a thousand times but have never heard sung back to you.

Maybe you're an experienced songwriter who feels creatively blocked or wants another set of ears to help uncover what's beneath the surface.

Or maybe you've simply wondered:

What would it feel like to write a song?

You don't have to arrive with an idea.

We can find it together.

I've spent much of my life writing songs with other people.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of co-writing with literally hundreds of people.

Some have been professional musicians.

Many have never written a song before.

Much of my work has taken place in spaces where songwriting becomes a way of exploring experiences that aren't always easy to put into ordinary conversation, including work with veterans, incarcerated communities and young people.

My TEDx talk, Sing Your Pain Away, grew out of this understanding of music as a tool for connection, expression and transformation.

Again and again, I've watched something happen when a person hears their own experience reflected back through music.

But one particular song changed the way I understood this work.
