Ali Wegner had been a singer and guitarist for more than 40 years, but had never been able to write a song of her own.
She had tried. She had gotten frustrated. Eventually, she accepted that songwriting simply wasn’t for her.

What is a Soul Song Session?
A Soul Song Session is a private, guided songwriting experience built around your story.
Maybe there’s a person you want to honor, a memory you want to preserve, a loss you’re moving through, a transition you’re trying to understand or a love you want to celebrate.
Perhaps there’s simply something stirring inside of you that you haven’t quite found words for yet…
Maybe you’ve never written a song in your life… Maybe you’ve been writing songs for 30 years… Maybe you’re moving through grief, a transition, a birth, a loss, a love story, a question you can’t quite answer.
Perhaps there is a story you’ve told a thousand times but have never heard sung back to you.
Or you may be an experienced songwriter who feels creatively blocked or wants another set of ears to help uncover what’s beneath the surface.
It’s possible you’ve simply wondered:
What would it feel like to write a song?
Before we meet, I’ll send you a writing prompt and invite you to spend some time journaling.
You can send me as much of that writing as you feel comfortable sharing.
I’ll read it before we meet.
Then we’ll sit down together for 90 minutes and listen for the song.
Not by forcing it.
Not by trying to make it clever.
But by paying attention to the conversation, story, images, phrases, emotions and melodies that already have energy.
And following them.

Before we meet, I’ll send you a simple journaling invitation to help you begin gathering the memories, images, stories, questions, or feelings we might explore together.
The Recording of our Session
Our conversation and creative process are yours to keep. Sometimes the moments that happen while a song is being written are just as meaningful as the finished song itself.
A Voice Memo Recording of Your Song
After our session, I’ll send you a simple recording so you can hear the song we created together and begin living with it.
Space for the Song to Keep Unfolding
If something wants to shift after our session, we’ll stay in conversation as we bring the first draft of the song to a place that feels true to both of us.

I’m Phoebe Hunt.
I’m Phoebe Hunt — a songwriter, fiddle player, recording artist and educator. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of co-writing with literally hundreds of people. Some have been professional musicians. Most have never written a song before.

Much of my work has taken place in spaces where songwriting becomes a way of exploring experiences that aren’t always easy to put into ordinary conversation, including work with veterans, incarcerated communities and at-risk youth.
My TEDx talk, Sing Your Pain Away, grew out of this understanding of music as a tool for connection, expression and transformation.
Again and again, I’ve watched something happen when a person hears their own experience reflected back through music.
I’ve spent much of my life exploring what happens when we stop trying to “get songwriting right” and instead learn how to listen.
I’ve written and recorded 6 albums of original music, toured internationally, facilitated songwriting experiences with people from many different walks of life, worked with veterans through songwriting retreats, and taught hundreds of people to access their own creativity.
But you do not need any of that experience to sit down with me.
You don’t need to know music theory.
You don’t need to know what key you’re in.
You don’t need to know how songs work.
That’s my job.

A Few Things You Might Be Wondering
You don’t need to have it all figured out before we begin.
Do I need to be a songwriter?
Absolutely not. You can arrive having never written a song in your life. I’ll guide you through the process.
If you’re already a songwriter, we can work together to explore an idea, move through a creative block, or listen for something you haven’t discovered yet.
Do I need to sing or play an instrument?
No. If you do, wonderful. If you don’t, that is completely fine. I can help with the melody, chords and musical structure as we shape the song.
Your voice in this process includes your words, your memories, your perspective and what feels true to you.
What if I don’t know what my song is about?
That’s okay, too. The writing you do before our session gives us somewhere to begin.
Sometimes the song someone thinks they’re coming to write isn’t the song that appears. We’ll stay curious and follow what feels alive.
What should I write about?
Anything that feels alive: a person, a relationship, a birth, a death, a memory, a place, a turning point, or something you’re still trying to understand.
It doesn’t have to be a big or dramatic story. Ordinary moments can hold extraordinary songs.
What happens before our session?
Once you reserve your session, you’ll receive a writing prompt. I invite you to spend some unhurried time with it and write freely.
You can send me as much of your writing as you feel comfortable sharing so I can read it before we meet.
How much time should I spend preparing?
Give yourself enough time to slow down and see what comes through. There’s no need to produce polished writing or find the perfect words.
A few memories, images or phrases can give us a starting point. This is an invitation, not a test.
Do I have to share something deeply personal?
You choose what you share. You can send me only the parts of your writing you feel comfortable bringing into our session.
A song can celebrate joy, humor, love or a small moment just as much as it can explore grief or change. We’ll work with the story you want to bring.
What if we don’t finish in 90 minutes?
Songs have their own timing. Our 90-minute session is the heart of the experience, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the creative process.
Your session includes up to 60 additional minutes of follow-up revision so we have room to bring the song to a completed first draft.
What happens after our session?
You’ll receive the Zoom recording of our time together and, approximately 48 hours later, a simple voice memo demo of your song.
Then you get to listen, live with it, sing it, and notice whether anything else wants to shift. We can use the included revision time to refine the first draft together.
Is the demo a professional studio recording?
Your included demo is a simple voice memo recording that lets you hear and keep the song we’ve written.
A full studio recording is a separate project. If your song begins asking for that next step, we can talk about the possibilities after we finish writing it.
Who owns the song?
This is a co-write. We share songwriting ownership 50/50.
If you later choose to professionally record the song, the artist who records it owns the master recording, while we retain our respective songwriting shares.
Can I professionally record my Soul Song?
Absolutely. Some songs are meant simply to exist for you and your family. Others start asking for a bigger life.
If you’d like my help creating a professional studio recording after we complete your song, we can talk about what that could look like and the additional cost. There’s no obligation to take that next step.
Can I give a Soul Song Session as a gift?
If you’re imagining this experience for someone you love, reach out before booking so we can talk about the best way to arrange it.
The person receiving the session should feel interested in participating and have the freedom to bring their own story.
How do the payments work?
The total investment is $999, paid in three installments of $333.
The first $333 reserves your session. The second is due at the close of our session, and the final $333 is due when you receive your demo.
My father, Trip, loved the number three—it threaded through his art, his spiritual practice, and the way he saw the world. Offering these sessions in three payments of $333 is a small nod to him.

My dad was my first musical teacher.
He taught me to love music. He taught me how to learn. And he helped shape my understanding that music can be a way of moving through this life—of listening, making meaning, and staying connected to what we love.
Since his passing, my siblings and I have felt called to gather and record the songs he left behind, along with music that carries his spirit and the legacy he left within our family.
A portion of the proceeds from Soul Song Sessions will help fund that tribute album, preserving his music for our children and future generations.
